The rough draft of Chapter 4 of the Road to Yosemite is done. Time to start writing Chapter 5 wherein the first wagon roads into Yosemite are actually cut. I'm up to about 1875.

I'm using one author as my guide in telling the story. He's where I came across the story I am trying to tell. Often, though, I go back to the original sources to get more information or clarification. I've noticed a couple times now the author I am copying just pulled passages verbatim from the original sources. without saying that is what he did.

It actually happened a few times, at least in small pilfered bits. But there was one time when this guy submitted a feature was derived entirely from a piece of novel research I had done on Ha Say Fu Hung Gar, a special style that Lam Sifu knew. That was a groundbreaking piece - IKF reprinted it a few times, once in a book (and no, I didn't get any more for that - the freelance contracts said nothing about that and I wasn't in a position to sue or anything).
Actually, Lam Sifu's first Shaolin book was derived almost entirely from the videotape introductions that we developed together. His ex-wife and I had a severe break so she took my name off all that research. Sifu actually apologized to me about that once, but I had already learned not to be overly attached to my writing, and techically all that was written on the clock, so WLE owned it. I think the thing that annoys me about it is that there was a glaring error in my research back then and that was repeated mindlessly by the person who assembled the book.
But that was so long ago...

Another entry into my "And then it Burned Down" series comes courtesy of Charles Dorman Robinson. He was painter and fierce advocate for Yosemite. He was a charter member of the Sierra Club. He spent 24 summers in Yosemite making paintings. He lived in SF at the time of the earthquake. But he had all his paintings in a warehouse for safekeeping. That warehouse burned down. He also lost his house to fire in 1921. All told he lost about twenty years worth of Yosemite paintings.
