(I'm impressed by the bass player's prowess) --tg RE: Unusual Covers - King Bob - 07-02-2025 One of my favorite Tower of Power songs, maybe only outdone by Down to the Nightclub. RE: Unusual Covers - thatguy - 07-12-2025 This guy, JP asked me late on Monday last week if I wanted to help him cover The Great Curve at open mic on Wed. I was at work all day on Tues and then I went to an open mic after work, so I didn't get to start on it until Tues nite, when I made the backing track (which took an hour to get servicable...). I focused on the backing vocals since I didn't really know what all they are singing. It's really complicated. There are 4 different vocals going on at the same time. I printed them all out and tried to come up with some mix of all the different parts and learn the part. I only had a bit of time late Tues and Wed afternoon to come up with a guitar part that works given the small amount of gear I can bring (nothing close to Adrian Belew's rig). When I got to open mic, JP and I only ran thru the song partway one or two times before we went on. It ended up being more "surfy" than I wanted. It's not good, but I am really impressed at how well it came out for how little we practiced and can only imagine how much better it would have been had we had more time. --tg RE: Unusual Covers - King Bob - 07-14-2025 Nice work. I would have gone with a different bass line - Tina's line and the vocal don't quite match up, which makes singing it difficult. I tried tapping the bass rhythm and singing and got messed up. (Plus I sometimes don't agree with her choices.) Or since it's all on the same chord, you could have programmed it and gone solo. TG - you might check out Angelique Kidjo's version - she streamlines the vocal interplay somewhat. RE: Unusual Covers - thatguy - 07-14-2025 One of the first "one chord" songs I've learned. The other that comes to mind is Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue". --tg |
