Did you mean Black Peter? Cold win? Did you mean Cold Rain & Snow? RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Drunk Monk - 04-19-2026 Black John was a dear friend of mine, someone I did Dead tour with when I was with the band. Indeed I meant Black Peter, but my brain glitched. Cold win was Cold Rain and that one's on spelchuk. The double All Around This World is on me too. Note that I was running a lot of calls, so some of my notes were made one-handed whilst the other was pushing a wheelchair. I do set lists out of habit. I used to have to write the 'official' reports for Rock Med when we were on tour and keeping set lists helped jog my memory. But they are often inaccurate because I am often engaged in other tasks, as you know. Here's the set list off setlist.fm Quote: Looking forward to seeing you tonight! NOTE that this show has been an hour behind on almost every stop of the tour. Friday's show was scheduled for 8-10:30 but it went for 9-10:31. Also note that it was a big long encore, so don't leave early. Also note that the food at the Quarry sux this year so far (unless you like subway sammiches). Eat beforehand. The bass player was great and I enjoyed Gillian and he taking turns on the snare (while still playing their own instruments). I was tripping on the lights against the quarry wall and trees. I didn't see many clouds of smoke, but maybe it was a contact high? I did see a shooting star somewhere in the middle of the show. It was a star, just between the tops of two trees, but it was slowly moving like a satellite, but much brighter than that. Little by little, it got dimmer and then disappeared. It could have been a satellite reflecting the sunset, but it was unusually bright. They should serve hot beverages, like coffee, tea, and or hot chocolate there. --tg RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Drunk Monk - 04-20-2026 Jerry's guitar was used for 3 - Ripple, High Time, & Black Peter. Those were just my notes on my iPhone. Keeping setlists is a habit of mine from those Jerry daze... Gillian played it for soundcheck (which I wasn't at because I was stupid not to go earlier). She did To Lay Me Down and Babe It Ain't No Lie. I would've loved to hear her take on Lay Me Down. the encore was similar to Friday's encore with that Stephen>NFA>Stephen>Dew. Friday was Box because Lesh was there, then Sugar, then this passage, then Goodnight. Overall I thought last night was the stronger show of the two, especially the energy of Set 1 and that Cassidy>Birdsong>Cassidy. Stacy really liked the Cold Rain and Snow. I thought Friday's Brokedown was stronger (I was getting misty on that one) but Friday had a primacy effect. The lights were accentuated for this show. There was a 'no light effects' policy at Drain the night before so everyone could see the crazy moshers and we could track if anyone was throwing sucker punches. This was the first time the Quarry put lights on the audience that way, more for the performers benefit, to get a better reaction out of them. That was such an improvement. The bass player was Paul Kowert. He was fantastic. He impressed me even more last night than on Friday because I could tune into him better. You are so right about concessions. They were better last year when they brought in some food trucks. This year, they suck. I don't know why. The Santa Cruz Eats is just subway sammiches (lame) and hot drinks would be killer. Saturday Verve had a booth because one of the members of Drain is a roaster and they were giving out cans of coffee. I drank too much coffee that night. RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - King Bob - 04-21-2026 I enjoyed the bass work too. New Speedway Boogie was a nice pick, and Ripple, which I'm not sure I ever heard the Dead play. Not a complaint, but they could have cast their net wider when choosing songs. Others that would work well with their style that I can think of are Althea, China Doll, He's Gone, and Row Jimmy. They could probably do a nice Standing On the Moon as well. The ending chorus of Speedway hits particularly hard lately. I'm saddened we never heard the Dead play Ripple. It had fallen out of their song list by the time we were following them. But that was our wedding song, and it's been way too long since we heard it live together. RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - King Bob - 04-22-2026 Ship of Fools would have been a good one too. RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Drunk Monk - 04-22-2026 Oooooh yeah. Luv SoF. I was kinda hopin for Monkey and the Engineer. That’s such a goofy song. RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - thatguy - 04-22-2026 I was hoping for Crazy Fingers, but had low expectations which were met. --tg RE: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Drunk Monk - 04-22-2026 I was hoping for Dark Star or Terrapin or The Other One. Those are my jams. I'm not sure any of those would work well for Welch Rawlings, but I'd enjoy hearing them try... |
