RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 02-14-2022 I need to keep better notes in my research. I have to write a script about James Savage, the man who led the first group of white men into the valley and I can't remember in what book I read one of the seminal stories. Savage owned several trading posts in the area around the Yosemite area. He also had several native american wives and spoke the local languages, a regular friend to the Indians. The Native Americans gave him a keg of gold to purchase goods for them in San Francisco. Savage brought along one of the Native Americans to show the Native Americans what they were up against should they decide to fight the White Man. Unfortunately for the Native Americans, Savage drank and gambled the gold away rather than make purchases. He also struck the Native American that was with him. When Savage later met with the Chiefs, the Indian that traveled with him told the Chiefs Savage was a liar and a cheat and was not to be trusted. I need to find out where that story is referenced so I can put the source into the script. I think it's in Bunnell but I'm not sure. Again. Better notes. I was trying to find a reference to a martial arts TV show where Guanyin fell in love with the white savior for my Fistful of Vengeance review. I know that info is somewhere in the KFM forum but I just could not search it out. Lost a good hour searching for that until I finally decided it was a dead end tangent and abandoned that rant completely. (02-14-2022, 09:26 AM)Greg Wrote: keg of gold Good band name. RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 02-14-2022 I have found reference to the SF/James Savage story in several spots. Christmas is saved. RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - thatguy - 02-19-2022 Maybe you can use this for your project: The ol' Rough Rider himself doin' the 1900's VR fad https://onceuponatown.tumblr.com/image/676287570219499520 --tv RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 02-19-2022 That's a popular shot. The next one in that series is with John Muir. Thank you. RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - thatguy - 02-20-2022 How about this one: ![]() --tv RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 02-27-2022 I have finished the first draft of Chap One: The Road to Yosemite. I'll be editing it on Monday and then maybe posting it. It's all about the Mariposa Battalion and their entry into the Yosemite Valley. I also learned the term Lansquenet. RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 02-28-2022 If you would like to read Chapter One of The Road to Yosemite, you can find it here: Road to Yosemite: Chapter 1 RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 03-30-2022 Just read an article called "Milton in Yosemite" about Milton's Paradise Lost was so important in the development of the notoriety of Yosemite by Reformed Protestantism. The article was 38 pages. 28 pages of article followed by 10 pages of source notes. RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 03-31-2022 Preparatory Sadness I belong to a group on Facebook called Yosemite History. The group discusses the history of the park through people sharing pictures and stories about the park. More accurately a gentleman by the name of Eldon Grupp shares pieces of his immense collection with us and tells stories about the pieces and how they relate to Yosemite. Most of the stories end with this is the only piece I know that exists. I've asked him a bunch of questions and he has been knowledgeable about all of them. He owns complete sets of all the early photographers in the park like Weed, Watkins, Muybridge and others. I believe he grew up in the park or at least visited there a lot. Yesterday, somebody asked Mr. Grupp if there was a way people could visit his vast collection. Mr. Grupp said no, due to the fact that he is 87 and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for multiple myelomas. Like I said, preparatory sadness. When Stacy's relative Wesley died, his collection was lost. http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=6237&pid=46525#pid46525 He had a gorgeous collection of art photos. He collected B&W prints, signed & numbered from noted photographers, mostly of exotic architecture. He was just getting into the Hutongs near Tiananmen and we had a few chats about that since I've gone past that area. He had one of those photo collections cabinets - perhaps there's a name for them - the ones with multiple flat drawers. It was packed. He also had several file cabinets full and rotated what he had up on the walls. We often wonder what became of all that - if the person who he gave power of attorney to had any idea of the value and if they did anything with it. Been doing a lot of reading for YMAA - submissions that I've rejected (or advised to reject) and technical stuff to learn all the new programs I'm using now. I'll get to this eventually, hopefully before your doc is complete. My apologies for being remiss. RE: Yosemite Movie Project Notes - Greg - 03-31-2022 tQ gave it a big meh for the little she read. And looking back, I concur. But I kind of want to finish the story before I go back and fix it. I'm currently fighting through Chapter Two. I'm tempted to reach out to Mr. Grupp to see if there was a way to do an interview to get at least an oral history of his life. I might have to slide into his DMs as the kids say.
