RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 01-20-2024 Zorro E1 of 10. The creation story. It’s okay. This Spanish production makes the espanol unmexican sounding (yeah, I just said that because I know there’s a difference but I can’t truly hear it). It’s got a Spanish TV flair especially with the love interest Lolita (que Linda!) and Diego (que guapo!) The natives are a bit over the top always wearing war paint, but Nah Lin has potential. Interesting role for Moscow from La Casa de Papel. The sword fights kinda bugged me. Zorro uses a swept hilt rapier which seems dated by the 19th, but what bugs me more is he seldom attacks with the point. It’s a lot of cutting and the distance is too close, literal swashbuckling style. The choreo reminds me of 90s Hollywood martial arts, flowery with lots of flips. And he does more absurd whip tricks than Indy. Tripping 4 soldiers by swinging the whip at ground level. Grabbing a soldier’s arm with the whip and flipping him into a wall. The whole notion that you can grab something with a whip is silly. But these are technical quibbles at first glance. I’ll watch more. Seen on Amazon prime. RE: Zorro - Greg - 01-21-2024 Technical Quibbles?! I'm in! RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 01-21-2024 I think I’m 4 eps deep now. It’s gotten more complex, to its credit. There’s now a Chinese character Mei on the team. Zorro raids a Chinese casino, and there’s very little Kung fu, and some of the henchmen looks suspiciously non-Chinese. There’s one sword hit with a dao, but that also is reminiscent of Indy. I do like the language barrier - the Chinese speak Chinese and everyone else speaks Spanish. Another technical quibble - the Chinese is all mandarin but the first Chinese immigrants to California spoke Cantonese. Whatev. There was one good fight move when a Chinese henchman gets the drop on Zorro and he’s told to drop his weapon. I’ve yet to truly get into this show - it’s just something episodic that I’m watching now. RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 01-24-2024 E5: I like Nah Lin, the ‘fake’ Zorro, better than Diego, the chosen Zorro. Lolita is still hawt. Still needs better swordfights. RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 01-30-2024 Still watching. It’s not getting any better. Nor is it any worse. I think one of the reasons I’m still watching is because it’s in Spanish and Mandarin, the two other languages I understand a tiny bit so it’s fun for me to compare what is being said to the subtitles. RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 02-19-2024 E7 (I think) No mandarin in this ep. There’s a new paper story angle that retells the adventures of Zorro in sepia tones - it’s a decent effect (affect?) and amused me. I might’ve dozed off during this ep so I’m not clear on what happened. Nah Lin is still the coolest character. Female native Zorro is where it’s at. Her attitude is fiercer than simpering blue blood Don Diego who can’t even hit on Lolita properly, despite his absurd handsomeness. RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 05-17-2024 Watched another ep - why has hasn’t the hawtty figured out that Diego is Zorro? She was kidnapped but escaped from his Zorro cave so she must know where it is (under Diego’s mansion). Ugg, I sound like Greg. Maybe she does know and that’s why she put off the wedding to the mayor. Meanwhile Nah Lin duelled Diego for the mask and lost. She shoulda won - she’s a better fighter and merciless. Now she’s in the tribal pit awaiting judgement. Almost done with this show so I might as well finish it… RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 05-22-2024 And we're done. The finale resolved several story arcs and primed it for a second season. Diego & Mei head to NY. Lolita is left behind but now she knows Diego is Zorro. Nah Lin gets a new red snake mask. Paco's backstory is revealed. There's a finale sword fight that's not very good. Clearly the choreographer has no idea how rapiers are used. Looks more like a lightsaber fight. If they get a season 2, I don't know if I'll tune in or not. Probably not. Not particularly D00M recommended. RE: Zorro - Drunk Monk - 04-16-2026 |
