A very romanticized version of a young Dylan. Guthrie, Seeger, Baez & Cash are characters, along with his band mates for the electric Newport Festival, which is the climax of the story. I liked how the lyricism told the story. Chalamet’s Dylan impression is prettier, less nasal, more easily digestible. Even though he tries to portray the asshole side of Dylan, Chalamet is too handsome and in tune to feel really authentic. And yet, as a simplified biopic, it’s okay. It gives some interpretation of Dylan’s lyrics, some context, like I said - simplified. I enjoyed it even though it bent the sound of Dylan to be more easy listening.
In a way, I enjoyed I’m Not There better -http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=1176 - because that tried to amplify the mystery, where this film veered more towards softening the blows and hailing Dylan for his genius. Nevertheless I still enjoyed it.
Recommended for D00Mers that like this sort of thing.
Seen on D+ (Hulu)

Watched it and was not impressed. I think Chalamet played Dylan way too much as a serious genius. He almost completely missed the humorous trickster side of Dylan that you see in Subterranean Homesick Blues. It just seemed like Oscar bait to me. We turned it off to go to bed about 2/3 of the way through and didn't care enough to go back to it the next day. I will say that he does okay with the songs, but they are also too serious. He doesn't generate the kind of excitement that Highway 61 Revisited needs. The look of the film was good, and Ed Norton was very good, but overall it was pretty forgettable.

Dylan should be difficult listening.

Speaking of difficulty, that reminded me of when ED showed us that G.G. Allin short? documentary? video. Difficult viewing.
