Turning Red meets Coneheads versus the Little Mermaid kaiju.
A coming of age film about an awkward teenage girl who wants to go to prom but discovers she’s a giant kraken pretending to be like normal humans. Her family covers up their blue skin and odd habits by claiming they’re from Canada (not France). She’s befriends a mermaid pretending to be human that’s the spitting image of Ariel. It’s predictably formulaic. Then everyone becomes giant kaijus and try to kill each other. Lots of tentacles.
The animation is gaudy dayglow like spurting multicolored cyalume into your eyes. Most of it is garish but it has psychedelic moments. Voice actors include Will Forte, Toni Collette & Jane Fonda. There’s some choice pop music - I enjoyed hearing Black Pink’s Pink Venom, but most of this I watched with the sound off and the Reggae Express radio show playing (which worked well). Just finished it tonight although the ending was exactly what I expected.
Kinda weak for Dreamworks. Not D00M recommended.
