The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)
#1
The book is quite long and involved, and I think it might be impossible to do a really good film of it. Here they take a different approach and do it sort of post-modern. It starts exactly as the book, with narration from David pondering who will be the hero of the story. Then we get into the story, occasionally stepping back out into the narration and David writing the story. It streamlines the story some, notably largely excising the first wife,  which was a good change in my opinion.

It's quite star-studded. Dev Patel stars, with Tilda as his aunt, Hugh Laurie as Mr. Dick, Peter Capaldi as Mr. Micawber, and Ben Whishaw appropriately cast as Uriah Heep. All are quite good. Plus a lot of those English actors that make you say "I've seen them before."

I thought it worked well, and Christina, who has never read the book, enjoyed it, so I'd recommend it to everyone except Mrs. DM, who would probably not like the license taken with the material.

I don’t think she’s read it.
