Luther, played by Idris Elba, must hunt down a serial killer. The only problem is Luther is in jail for previous misdeeds. It probably would have helped to have watched the BBC show Luther to find out why he is in prison but we kind of got the idea that Luther might have stepped outside the lines one too many times as a detective and they finally through him in jail. Again, conjecture. Haven't see the show.
The show starts with Luther promising a woman to find her son. Then we find Luther in jail. Then we see the woman finding the son dead after some bizarre ritual. Plus, the killer taunts Luther in his jail cell. There is only one thing to do.
Despite our initial confusion of why is Luther in jail, the first two acts are quite good as Luther tries to find the killer while being chased by his friends in the police department. The final act is just stupid beyond belief. There are kidnappings and blackmail and plot twists coming from miles away clear as day and they end up snow bound in a foreign country. All the dumb.
There are plenty of stunts and fights and beautiful footage of police cars racing through the London streets, car lights flashing. The fights are of the kind you get when people don't know how to fight and just sort of whale at each other.
Not recommended unless you are huge Idris Elba fan. Andy Serkis also plays a key role in this film.
