Still: A Michael J Fox film
#1
They did a screening of this "coming soon to your Apple TV" film at work today in the Steve Jobs Theater. I signed up mostly to be able to see the theater, but it was a nice change of pace to see a film in one, too.

It's a bittersweet doc about MJF, his rise and then his battle with Parkinson's. The tone is really similar to the Val doc, but whereas in Val's case, he had self-documented so much of his own life, that was the source material. Here, they sourced video from quite a lot of his TV and films, but edit it down to clips that matched up to the story as it was being told from MJF himself. He'd written a book and recorded the audiobook, so a lot of the audio came as excerpts of that. Intermixed with that were re-enactments using actors, and direct, camera in your face, interview with MJK now. The motivation for the film is for MJK to tell the story while while he still can. I never watched any of his TV shows and really only saw the Back to the Future movies and maybe one or two others. TIL: he married one of his costars.

The struggles are hard. It's very honest. The LOL moment for me was a clip from the Curb Your Enthusiasm show where he makes fun of his own illness.

No sword fights, but...

At the end, the director and MJK came out and did a brief Q & A. The director asked 3-4 questions and MJK struggled to answer, then they took 3 questions from the audience. In one answer, MJK referenced the "Forged in Fire" TV show and repeated a quote "this blade can kill you" (he might have said "this blade can heal you"...he can be hard to understand and he doesn't hold the mic very still)

Not particularly recommended, but not bad. I enjoyed it coming in with no expectations.

What a cool event. I watched a lot of Family Ties so that’s where I first saw MJF. I might watch but I don’t have AppleTV right now.

Very cool. I will probably watch. I eschewed Family Ties. My big introduction to MJF was, of course, Back to the Future.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
