The Assistant (2022)
#1
The latest from Malaysian martial arts star Hairul Azreen. After serving 10 years for a crime he was framed for, Zafik seeks revenge on the murderer of his wife and child. He meets his wife’s psycho cousin Feroz (Azreen) and together they walk the path of vengeance.

It’s a different role for Azreen, borderline villainous with an annoying laugh poached from Money Heist’s Denver. Also he is more of a supporting character but this takes a Fight Club turn, which I guessed at early. The murderer is obvious too and I guessed that from the start.

This is almost a fast forward to the fight scenes flick. Obviously cliched from the get go, Azreen delivers some top notch hand2hand, along with some nice fire fights. His moves are still sharp and precise, and although he only does a few multiple move sequences, the combat dialog is easy to follow and has moments of inventiveness.

This gets a little longwinded at the end. There’s way too much epilogue following the final fight. It’s a solid final fight so the rest feels belabored and the last scene gets too silly. Nevertheless, it’s enjoyable as an action romp.

D00M recommended for the fights. The rest is mediocre.
