Homunculus (2021)
#1
A Japanese horror/thriller that I watched on a whim. Based on a manga because almost everything is coming out of Japan.

A homeless amnesiac gets involved in a trepanation experiment which triggers his ability to see the hidden trauma of others. The trauma is like dream visions, surreal manifestations that need to be decoded, and that’s what drew me in based off the preview. The visions a wild but this could’ve used a lot more of them. Maybe the shot their special fx budget early.

It’s set in Shinjuku which I might have to put on my bucket list.

One vision is of a yakuza boss, which sets up the rules of this story - how the visions work and how they get sorted. There’s another with a kogal that messed up in that messed up way Japan cinema can be so messed up - downright disturbing from multiple angles.

But after that, it delves into the mystery of why the protagonist is amnesic, and he meets a gal who is also amnesiac, and of course, their traumas are linked.

Not D00M recommended except for that kogal subplot. Fast forward to that.
