Sandra Bullock stars as Ruth Slater a woman released from prison after 20 years, trying to reconnect with the world and her younger sister. Slater was convicted of killing a local sheriff who had come to evict her from her house. Life on the outside isn't very easy for Ruth. She can't get the job she was promised. Everyone hates her because she killed a cop. And she has restraining order against visiting her sister who was more like her daughter.
Bullock is really effective in the role of the twitchy ex-con. Kingpin plays her reluctant lawyer. And John Boy Walton is taking care of Ruth's sister who has problems of her own.
It was a good solid family drama if a bit bleak.
