I thought I should dive into Ms. Moreno's backstory as I prepare to see Steven Spielberg's version of West Side Story. Plus, I was floored by the revelation that she had a long standing affair with Marlon Brando.
It is a serviceable if rushed look at her life interspersed with scenes from her current life such as celebrating her 87th birthday and working on "One Day at a Time". On the one hand she had steady employment for year and years. On the other she was typecast and had terrible parts for years and years. Another surprise was that she was in The King and I as Tuptim, the bride present to King Mongkut. Her big breakout was the original West Side Story. But she didn't get any movie work after that and segued into Electric Company (Along with Morgan Freeman) Despite the ups and downs of her career, she is an EGOT winner. Her oscar win speech was probably one of the shortest.
