Clarence Avant is one of the movers and shakers in the records, films and politics that you most likely never heard of. He helped Bill Withers get started. Helped Soul Train. Was a friend to Lew Wasserman. Crucial in the political careers of Andrew Young, Billy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barrack Obama. How he actually helped, I couldn't really tell you but it had a lot to do with talking to people that he knew.
Avant has a fascinating life story that is poorly told. It jumps around a lot basically going from anecdote to anecdote with no clear transition between them and how the stories even support them. Again, I don't get a clear idea of what he did.
Avant is the least famous person in the film, though. Everyone is in it to talk about Avant. Quincy Jones, the heads of LaFace records, Jimmy Jam, David Geffen, Bill Clinton, Barrack Obama. The list goes on and on and they all credit Avant with helping them and being his friend. Come for the anecdotes!
