Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey
#1
Magic is real in our world. The narrator is a private investigator in Oakland. She gets hired to investigate a murder at a high school for those with magic powers. Her sister is a teacher there, and they are estranged. She drinks a lot. It was a promising premise, but didn't come off. I thought it was a little to YA-ish, and the ending was super derivative, not to mention too tidy. No swordfights. Not recommended.

She’s a local author. I’ve wanted to pick up her novellas having to do with hippo-hunting in the Mississippi — they were well-received. She has another book out, maybe beginning a series? Post-apacolypse Librarians. Sign me up!

Were those hippos hungry? Because they could make a game of that and then Robot Chicken could spoof it with a movie trailer. Or KB could just make that up to mess with DM...

Back to the book, I should note that her writing was good; I just thought this book didn't quite work.
