The Long Way Up (Apple TV +)
#1
(Mentioned in the 2020 EOY Doom Zoom call)

Ewan McGregor rejoins Charley Boorman for a 3rd installment of the "Long Way" series, this time going on a road trip from "the end of the world" in Patagonia to Los Angeles. For some reason, they decide that it would be cool to do it on electric bikes (I've heard of combustion engines having problems at the high altitudes of the Andes, but they didn't say anything about that).

Episode one - Picking the hardware. They try some bikes from Zero (in Scotts Valley), but the range is shit (~80miles), and opt for Harley's e-hogs, but those are not yet available in production, nor are they adapted to this kind of adventure riding. So they work with the company to get 2 prototype bikes made. Concurrently, their chase team is working with e-truck manufacturer Rivian to get some trucks, but again, not available in production, so they work with the company to get some prototypes.

The rest of the episodes are just a story of the logistics nightmare they've created for themselves because of the above choices as well as deciding to leave patagonia in the middle of winter. (Batteries don't work as well when they are cold)

It was fun to watch and I wasn't familiar with the previous installments in the series, but I felt that the docs weren't edited that well. There was a lot left out. It seems like some choices that were introduced towards the end of the series were probably known about early on and should have been less of a surprise to the team. There were some, but I was hoping for more landscapes and cultural exchanges than were offered. Some of the locations were amazing and beautiful. I think the pacing of the episodes was a little off.

No sword fights. But recommended for Doom travel and cycle buffs.
