Ava (Netflix 2020)
#1
Jessica Chastain indulges her need to hit people in this story of an assassin who is about to be retired by the company she works for. John Malkovich and Colin Ferrel co-star.

There is also this weird melodrama story that is going on with Ava's family. She fights with her mother, Geena Davis and has mixed feelings for her former boyfriend Common.

Is the story about an assassin getting killed by his own spy agency the oldest trope in the book. It felt incredibly trite. And they never give a good reason for why they need to terminate Ava.

But there were plenty of fights and in those fights we saw a lot of the back of Ava's head. I got the feeling Chastain didn't do a lot of her own fights. Which isn't a good course to take especially after seeing Theron in Atomic Blonde where you could see Theron's face all the time. Though there were a lot of fights, there wasn't anything particularly unique about them. Just lots of them.

And during the pause in the fights, you got to see Ava and melodrama. It was quite schizophrenic. What kind of movie am I watching. I think they tie together in that after Ava had problems at home, she went off to become an assassin. Which is what you do.

So, plenty of fights. Plenty of knife fights. Plenty of stupidity. Malkovich was good in his role as Malkovich.

I will probably watch this eventually. It's queued. I have a soft spot for assassin femme fatale. I think that's a DOOM thing.

Thanks for the heads up. I won't expect much. Just Chastain hittin peeps and being a drama queen, like usual.

I have no issue with actors not doing their own stunts (although it's much cooler when they do).

Theron vs. Chastain? Put my money on Theron every time. In every way.

It was because she asked questions of her kills. That's a no no in the assassin biz.

It was okay. Jessica redeemed a lot with her acting. The drama was engaging, albeit predictable. The choreo was one move, one cut - some Jessica but hairstyle concealed a multitude of stunt women. We can't all be Charlize. I did enjoy the botched kill in the red dress and subsequent escape. The final showdowns between master and student, and between proteges, left too many openings for high level assassins. Killers of that caliber wouldn't be so sloppy, you'd think. I hardly recognized Joan Chen, but I knew she looked familiar. That whole underground casino was a dumb side arc.

It was another story of an alcoholic chess player (in the opening intro montage, Ava is listed as being a chess player in her high school yearbook).

And it's open for a sequel.

Greg did make one glaring oversight in his review. He missed the sword fight. It was in that intro montage. Sure, it was fencing in masks so it might not have been Jessica - it was probably another stunt woman. But... knickers.

Only recommended for DOOM yetis, and it's just for all the knickers.

When you are done with Assassin Rulez Book please forward it to me. I need to see where it says no questions of the victims. Because once you ask them and then kill them who cares?

I could loan you my copy...

...but then I have to kill you.

That's what it says in the Assassin Rulez Book. It's in the section right after poisons.
