I went downtown today to pick up a card for Tara's 21st birthday in two weeks (yeah, 21, that's another topic I'll grapple with next week). It was rough. My buddy's tie-dye shop was empty except for the murals he painted on the walls and an art installation in the window about covid. Glow, an overpriced candlemaking shop where one of Tara's friend's wound up working was being replaced by a fashion shop. So many closed doors - Buttercup, 99 Bottles, that Pacific Garden Starbucks (grateful of that) - I knew a lot of them had left but it was sad to see it firsthand.
So I've been meaning to watch this because it's set in Santa Cruz. Well, no. It's not Santa Carla like Lost Boys. It's Brighton Falls where you can drive from the boardwalk up the pier and get to a junkyard in Oakland. Haile Steinfield cam moped to work at the boardwalk from her home where I think you can see the Bay Bridge in the background. There's some gratuitous coastal hwy shots, and of course, the Golden Gate is in the background at the end. Whatevs man, the boardwalk shots are nice. Good to see it full of people, like it should be.
This is a Transformer film, so I didn't expect much. I remember the toys and when I wasn't looking, it transformed into this blockbuster film franchise. The story is silly transformers stuff - I still don't get the franchise but I don't put much effort into that. Such effort feels wasted.
Haile gives an amazing performance throughout, especially considering that she's working with CGI actors all the way through. She makes it work.At least, as much as it works. She's astonishingly genuine in the midst of an absurd story.
John Cena is there to coach the bots on how to fight. Srsly, transformer fights look like pro wrasslin.
No sword fights, but Bumblebee has a forearm switchblade sword (which is silly because he can just turn his hand into a blaster and the blade snaps off easily so others can stab him in the heart). Not DOOM recommended, even if you miss the Cruz.
