Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)
#1
aka G vs the Smog Monster.  This was my all time fav Gojirra flick, followed closely by Mechagodzilla & Monster X.  It's funny to watch now.   I can't remember when I last saw it. I forgot about the animated segues and the psychedelic dance club fish head scene. There's some flailingly surreal moments.  Hedorah remains the most Lovecraftian of G's foes.  Some of the segue scenes are J-70s-artsy - they don't quite work but watching them now, they're kinda charming in their failure. And a few work, like the broken female mannequin in the sludge.  I remember as a kid, the sulfuric acid scene where the victims turn different colors then become skeletons kinda scared me.  Looking back on that now, I think it was because it was so surreal for me at the time. G does a lot of G sign language at Hedorah and H pops sludge pimples back.  That gojirra fanboy kid is so annoying - that's such a cliche in Kaiju flicks - always annoying. I kinda wanted G to step on him at the end. It's an odd battleground, just a big open field, so the finale fight doesn't have the impact of one inside a city where buildings get smashed.  And it has a false ending for no reason. The ultimate attack fails, so they just do it again and it works. What's the point of that really?

All that being said, they should remake this one. Imagine how cool this could be with today's effects.
