Burning (2018)[Korean] by Chang-dong Lee
#1
This made the short list for best foreign language film of 2018, but wasn't among the final 5 nominees.  I really need to check those out, because if this didn't make it, they must have been something.

Burning has an impressive pedigree.  It's based on the short story "Barn Burning" by Haruki Murakami.  The screenplay is further inspired by the short story "Barn Burning" by William Faulkner.  No, that's not a typo.  Further, director Chang-dong Lee is an acclaimed novelist who turned to directing movies in his 40s.  He's made six films, and all are rated over 7 on Imdb (and likely legit, unlike some ratings).  No, I have not seen any of the others.  This is my first exposure to his oeuvre.  But I'll be checking out the others.

Burning is not an action movie.  It is a character study that explores belief in a number of ways.  I felt it was a little slow wrapping up, but otherwise it works almost hypnotically, with long, complex shots, especially when actress  Jong-seo Jun is on screen.  This is her first acting role and hopefully not her last, as she's inspired and quirky.
I'm nobody's pony.
