BlacKKKlansman (2018)

First off cinema should only be seen on your phone while flying. I must give it up to the airlines though, they are now building holders into the seat backs to hold the various devices for viewing.

This film has been getting the buzz and I always need to know what the buzz is about. Suffice it to say that after seeing the film I still don't see what the buzz is about. To be fair, a lot of Spike Lee films leave me cold.

In the case of BlacKKKlansman, a black police officer gets invited  to join the Klan in Colorado Springs after he answers a want ad in the paper. The black police officer gets a white police officer to be the face in the group. And that's about it for the movie. I kept on waiting for the and then what event. And it never happens. A lot of the film is uncomfortable as it show the heinous treatment and behavior of white supremacists. Of course if you aren't white, I'm sure it's nothing new.

The film feels very preachy and it does talk a lot about today's white supremacists both subtly and unsubtly.

In the end, I'm happy to have seen it so I know what people are talking about, but it isn't a very good movie.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

I enjoyed it.  It's very Spike Lee.  Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that you don't 'get' his work, Greg.  I often wonder how Lee's stuff plays out for non-minorities (I suppose you could play the Irish Catholic card here if need be).  It was very tongue-in-cheek, and I was surprised how Lee portrayed the the Black student president as prejudice in her own way, somewhat balancing things out, but not really.  It was funny in that sly sort of Lee way, but really a set up for the duel lectures of Duke and Turner juxtaposing Birth of a Nation and the ultimate gut punch of the real news conclusion. I liked Driver's character, really the first time that he's worked for me, and Buscemi, who plays the same sort of role he always does.  Washington was alright as the lead - he had a lot to work with and there were several character development leaps, nevertheless a big role for him.
