I've been remiss in telling you about this site. It's the best-kept secret on the internet, though it's not really a secret and maybe you already know about it.
https://www.bynwr.com/
The "by" stands for by. The "nwr" stands for Nicolas Winding Refn. Yes, it's his pet project, an attempt to shed light on forgotten renegades of cinema and resurrect their films. It started as a business idea, but became an act of love, or inspiration, and he's decided to make the site free.
Every month three films are made available for streaming. In addition, there are articles providing background into the auteurs and their times.
First up is The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds, directed by Bert Williams. Also starring Bert Williams. And written and produced and just about everything else by Bert Williams. Perhaps you've heard of him. But I doubt it. The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds was long thought a lost film, but recently a copy was found and lovingly restored. It's far from a masterpiece, full of amateurish elements, but there is an infectious energy behind it, some visually intense scenes, and more skill in the cinematography than one would expect from a rank amateur.
If you decide to delve into this site, I would highly recommend reading the onsite article on Bert Williams, "BERT WILLIAMS: STARK RAVING DRAMA" by Bob Mehr, before checking out The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds. What an amazing and crazy guy. Knowing who's behind this film makes it all the more enjoyable.
There are two more movies on the site for the month of August: Hot Thrills and Warm Chills and Shanty Tramp. Not certain if they vanish after that.
Meanwhile, I am waiting anxiously for September and the availability of the next three films and articles.
Not certain who on Doom will find this their cup of tea. But for me it's very inspirational reading about these crazy mavericks determined to "make art" despite lack of funds or connections or know-how. And their singular visions are, well, idiosyncratic as hell.
