Vacations are for *suckers*. Lay about in foreign places with no fixed schedule, letting anarchy rule your waking hours, dealing with crowds of foreign people who just want your money and then want you gone? Heat, no air conditioning, damaging UV rays from the sun? It’s a mug’s game and it will kill you by inches while whispering in a bored tone that you are having the time of you life.

No, sir, none of that “sun/fun” malarkey for me! I’m going on vacation the New American Way!

I’m a gonna work! For *Free*!

My friend Alan, he of Borderlands Books, asked me if I want to dust off my bookselling skills and work their booth at WorldCon, which is being held in San Jose this year. I haven’t been to a con since high school, and World Con is the most literary of the bunch (it is where the Hugos and the John W. Campbells are awarded). It will be shifts at the booth (where more than 20 author events are scheduled, more added daily) then attending Nerd parties with the other denizens of Nerdistan.

Take that, Euro-fools! I get 5 days in an air-conditioned bunker filled with nerds! Enjoy your “culture”, suckers!

This is certainly the year to go. In our own back yard.
Don't put it off until next year, because then you'll have to travel to some dismal foreign country.
Where the heck is Dublin anyway?

It’s in the East Bay. There’s a BART station there, along with some vanilla-tasting whisky.

On the 16th it’ll be Florence for a few more days, then on to Rome.

Mmmmm ‘nilla.

Dude, shouldn't you be in Paris already?

Just remember, the louder and slower you speak, the better the French and the Italians can understand you.

The coffee will be better than what you are swilling (if I can find a 3rd wave place in walking distance...) and the pizza is...Hey! I don’t wanna hear about all your great food and stuff (I totally want to hear about it)(and see pictures).

Never go up against a Yeti when coffee is on the line. Italian coffee is consistently good. There are some consistently *great* coffees closer to home.

Also: Tea-Drinker! Who cares what you think, anyway! Why don’t you go Earl your Grey or somethin, huh?!
