I gave up on M. Night Shymalan a long time ago. But I always did like his Bruce Willis- Samuel Jackson Super Hero film 'Unbreakable'. I always wondered what the next chapter in that movie would be.
Split is kind of the answer to that. James Macavoy stars as the man with 23 personalities. He kidnaps three girls as part of some upcoming ritual one of the personalities wants to perform. It's a slow burn kind of film, but artfully done. You do spend a lot of the film asking how do the pieces fit together.
I'm going to say M. Night is not a fan of cutting. He lets his shots linger. Which is sometimes good and sometimes self indulgent. It's also a very quiet film. There isn't a lot of yelling and screaming.
Split is one of M. Night's better films and I did like it. But it ends on a huge cliff hanger. And the infamous cameo which leads to glass. There is also another shoutout to Unbreakable but it is never told how it comes together.
