He was my go to history author. His main focus was the Mediterranean countries.
I first started reading him after reading Guy Gavriel Kay's "Sailing to Sarantium" because I wanted to know more about the Byzantine Empire. He also did fabulous books about Venice, Rome and the Popes.
He was more of a storyteller than a historian, finding the stories from history that made for great reading.
