Ugly (2013) (Hindi) by Anurag Kashyap
#1
The disappearance of a 10-year-old girl and the ensuing search brings out suspicions and conflicts among family, relatives and those involved in the police investigation.
This a surprisingly engaging movie -- dark, gritty, and complex -- and it ever keeps you guessing where it's headed as the police investigation proceeds.

The movie might have a couple week areas, but mentioning them could reveal too much.  Besides, the movie is so strong in so many ways that it more than makes up for a flaw or two.  The soundtrack is brilliant.  The film was shot mostly in the suburbs of Mumbai and has a crowded, claustrophobic feel to it.  It is rich in present-day Indian culture, showing everyday activities of ordinary people, as well as the seamier side of society.

Highly recommended, but I don't know for whom.  Currently Netflix streamable.
I'm nobody's pony.
