Under the Moons of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
#1
Actually this is an omnibus volume of the first three Mars novels: Princess of Mars, Gods of Mars, and Warlord of Mars. I bought it just intending to trade it, but decided to read it since I haven't read this stuff since I was maybe 13. (Interestingly, the book had a foreword by James P. Hogan.) The first novel is the best; it's still kind of exciting (for me anyway) and has more detail about Martian society. The second two books fall into the pattern of all the rest of them, and all the Tarzan books too: the woman gets abducted, he goes after her. He almost gets her back, but not quite, and he's off after the adbuctors again. Finally he kills them and gets her back, and the end. The second book ends abruptly, with a cliffhanger, and the story continues in the third book. If you are nostalgic/curious, read the first one and skip the others.
