Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway

I think this is one of the best books I've read this year. The main character repairs old clocks, and there is a mysterious clockwork mechanism at the heart of the story. And there's a secret society. And spies. And a criminal brotherhood. And an evil mastermind. It's rather sprawling, sort of like Dickens in that, and there was a spot in the middle where I thought it dragged (also like Dickens), but it really picked up speed at the end. And this guy can write really well; it was a pleasure to read. I do think it was marred by some nerd boy sexual fantasy creeping in around the main female character, but that was maybe 1% of the book. I believe this is only his second book, so he will probably get better. His next book is coming next year, and I think it will be one to watch for.
