Better Than Us (2018)
#1
Russian series on Netflix.  I watched this on the recommendation of a friend (Don Wong in Tai Chi class), who had seen the first couple episodes and found it intriguing.  It's set in the near future and involves humanoid robots and in particular Arisa, an advanced import from China that does not seem to be constrained by Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics.

The story itself is a bit pedestrian, centered on a family in the midst of breakup.  But where it shines is with the humanoid robots, and especially Arisa.  Those performances are creepy-impressive and take you deep into "uncanny valley" territory.  There are sixteen episodes, and while packed with subplots and complications, it comes across sluggish, very repetitive, with characters changing their loyalties time and again seemingly just to milk conflict.  By the end, I was disliking everyone.

In hindsight, I should have bailed after the first few episodes.

I might recommend the first couple episodes just for a taste of the uncanny valley.
I'm nobody's pony.
