Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance
#1
Saw this on the new book shelf at the library and grabbed it. He is from a hillbilly family in Ohio and Kentucky who wound up with a law degree from Yale. It was an interesting portrait of the hillbilly culture (some of which I was familiar with from my Southern family roots) and a depressing description of the decline of rural America, and the way he escaped. Toward the end there is a good bit about the white poor and politics which is very topical right now. He's a pretty good writer and it was a quick read.
