This is a story of ants, with soldiers larger than humans, setting out to exterminate humans. Their queen (who is sentient) mutates the mammals so they grow human sized and develop intelligence, upright posture and hands. The animals then side with the ants. It's mostly told from the point of view of a cat who takes the name Mort(e) and is looking for a dog he was friends with before the war. I guess you'd have to call it a fantasy because of all that. It was fast-paced and kept my interest, and I wound up finishing it in a few days. Ending was pretty good and did not disappoint. It took a turn I did not expect toward the end. No real glaring plot holes, although I did wonder why the humans tried to battle the ants with guns and not insecticide.
A debut novel, so he might be someone to watch.
