First City Music Festival @ Monterey Fairgrounds 8/23/14
#1
I got passed some comp tickets to this because they were released to Warfield staff (they do that when shows are undersold) and none of them wanted to make the 2+ hour trek south for this). So T and I went, but only for a little. Some of T's elementary school friends got together to do some boogie boarding and I came along to watch the dolphins play in the surf, which always makes me happy.

But on to the Festival - major hipster scene. Lots of steampunkish jewelry, flowery gypsy-esque blouses, and several tables slinging vinyl. There was a huge carnival with those sketchy carny rides going full throttle (I swear I've never seen some of those rides go so fast) and schuckster games for cheap stuffies. Nice scene tho. Mellow, clean and lots of kids. Here's some reviews:

Puddles Pity Party: This is that 6'+ tall clown that covers Lorde's Royals. That's all we caught of his set. That was just perfect. T said she could sing it better and I had to agree (although I said she'd have totally rocked it in clown make-up, which she totally denied).

Tanlines: T liked it. I can't remember them.

Vau De Vire Society: Cheesey burlesque. They had two synchronized contortionists balancing shamisirs on their feet in headstands, so we watched. Was totally busted by a JNK friend who also scored free tix who came with her 9-year-old son. She covered her son's eyes. T was amused by the pole dancer and said that a lot of the gals at her aerial arts class do it (she's now studying tissue). I said 'no pole dancing for you'.

Mr. Little Jeans: Female vocalist backed by synths. Kinda 80s synth pop. Not bad but not outstanding.

Phantogram: We got distracted by the rides and they ended their set early, so we only caught the last notes of the last song as we were walking up. T recognized their tune. I sorted did too. Bummed I missed them but the kids were having a blast on the rides.

The Stepkids: Fun three-piece. We watched this gay hipster guy really getting into it dancing his huiyin off

Blind Pilot: Standing bass. I luv standing bass. They had a very pleasant sound but not something I would go out of my way for.

Beck: Still satisfying. He started with 5 guitarists on stage but changed it up as the set progressed. I'm glad he let loose of Loser early so we didn't have to wait until the end of the set as we left early. Devil's Haircut and Hell Yes were fun (great intro to Hell Yes). T liked him.
