Skrillex @ BGC 2/8/14
#1
I do enjoy dubstep. It's like modern day porn for bassworshippers like myself. Remember back in the day when porn flicks had plots? They were kind of like martial arts flicks, ten minutes of plot, then an action scene. Nowadays, porn has no plots, just sex scenes strung together, kind of like an MMA montage, or like dubstep. I can enjoy dubstep for a few minutes until I realize that I need a dose of something to make me forget that the music isn't really going anywhere. I got into this discussion with an old hippie friend who was doing a ''kids today" rap about how nowadays, a big soundsystem and lights are all that is needed. Kids today are easily impressed by loud sound and bright lights. And that's true, but I had to counter that there's a lot to be said for big soundsystems now. And as a bassworshipper, clean bass is where it's at for me. You could play just about anything and as long as the bass is good, I'm happy.

So on to the show - Skrillex had just done a week of dates skipping back and forth over the bay, culminating in the sold-out BGC show. Dubstep attracts a darker crowd than most EDM, not as many candyravers, more dubsteppers, as always a lot of scantily-clad gals in furry boots and some trippy tricksters, but most of the guys wear street clothes - baggy jeans, t's, flannels and hoodies. There were two opening acts. Tekimonsta was a blonde gal with rather lugubrious beats. A$ip was a dude whose beats would make a perfect soundtrack for a seizure. 'nuf said about those two. Much to my delight, the house music celebrated Bob Marley's birthday by playing some tracks. On that big bass heavy soundsystem, that was a real treat. As for Skrillex, well, nobody drops the base like Skrillex. He had a fun digital countdown clock that started 5 mins before he took stage - built suspense nicely, especially with the dubstep enhancement. Overall, Skrillex was good stuff. Rocks the heart of my bottom, at least for a few minutes until I started craving some sort of illicit substance to knock out my short term memory to make it all sound more fresh. I did manage to catch when he dropped my fav riddem of his, Mek it bun dem. That was fun - plenty of red, green and gold lasers accompanied it and it sounded great. Just for fun - here's the vid:

Luv dat. Heart

RM was way overstaffed which was great so I could just walk about, pose, and enjoy. There were two good DM moments. There was a radio call asking RM to approve a patron who had a 'sack of white powder for a medical condition' (srsly?) And then there was a guy who wanted 3 pair of earplugs, to which DM casually mentioned 'we take donations'. He said 'cash donations?' and Dm said enthusiastically 'Yes!' so he pulls a tiny container of goo from his pocket and scraps a pea-sized glob onto dm's palm. 'Oh, you said Hash donations...well we take those too.' Dm passed it along to another vol who was sitting at the table as he didn't have need for it. She was delighted - it smelled very nice, sweet and sticky like honey - and dm is sure it was put to good use.

Just before I left for the show, my pom barfed on my lap. It was only water - sometimes he drinks too much water and then spits it up - and for a moment I thought it an ill omen, but it all turned out ok.
