A remake of Master of the Flying Guillotine, a classic Kung Fu flick starring Chen Koon Tai, who I spent a weekend with in Florida. ED might remember going to see that flick w/Dm, missing it, and winding up in some storm drains. The original is super cheesey, but to the point of being entertaining. The new one is all bad CGI, scenic panoramas, gratuitous slo mo, digital blood, bullets, arrows, cannonballs, and flying guillotines, and grandiose underlying patriotism. It might have been better in 3D as it has some spectacle. Lots of sword fights. Not really DOOM tho - it's like a bad Hollywood superhero flick. I think the guy that grows hair all over his body (like a monkey boy in a freak show) is in it. He's somewhat of a celeb in PRC. I'll have to double-check that.

Another Flying Five Finger One Armed Eight Pole Shaolin Exploding Death Touch Thursday feature on El Rey. Another film starring my bud, Chen Kuan-Tai. I've actually seen this film many times so seeing it again was a minor event. It's such a funny story concept. The design of the flying guillotine is so absurd. I saw this pseudo-doc on the greatest Kung Fu weapons and they named the flying guillotine as the top one. srsly? Then they tried to recreate one and make it work, which they couldn't really as it's an absurd design. Nevertheless if there's one weapon I would really luv to add to my arsenal, it would be the flying guillotine.

Another Flying Five Finger One Armed Eight Pole Shaolin Exploding Death Touch Thursday feature on El Rey, played back-to-back with MotFG. It stars the same cast, more or less (which is funny because SPOILER pretty much everyone dies in the first one END SPOILER), but the lead is Ti Lung instead of Chen Kuan-Tai. I don't think I saw this one before. And I didn't see it this time either because it was late and I fell asleep. I was really getting into it, but it started at 11 on a Thursday following a long week. Dammit. What was really weird was that I was struggling to keep awake, and as it had a lot of the same actors as MotFG, I was getting completely lost in the storyline.
Oh hold the phone....I just discovered that there was a rip-off Zatoichi series starring Lung Sheng (whoever he was) in the titular role. The first rip-off film was Zatoichi and the Flying Guillotine (1974). Oh look. It's available for free on YouTube. Sweet. Maybe I can stay awake through this one.
