The Man from Nowhere
#1
Ok, so this is my last week of netflix streaming. We've cancelled our service because we need to save for our upcoming move to a better school for T (I don't know where that will be yet, but I will let you know when the time comes; planning to stay in the area because of my Dad). So I've been voraciously devouring netflix movies - many I've started and bailed out on, including Girl from the Naked Eye which stars an acquaintance, Jason Yee, who I once stayed up all night with along with Cung Le, drinking and talking, in GA or someplace. That was a long time ago and he was showing off the rushes of the film on his laptop. I'm about half way through, but I might not make it.

But I did make it through TMfN, which is a tasty bit of ultravi - real horrorshow! Its a gritty Korean modern urban hell flick, sharp contrast to Red Dawn actually. A broken retired pro special forces dude goes up against drug-dealing organ-harvesting gangsters. At first, some of the fight scenes were done off camera, which was annoying, but when they did erupt, wow, great stuff - guns, knives, fisticuffs, broken glass and arterial sprays. It reminded me of John Woo's gangster classics - some overly sappy melodramatic bit, parsed by rapid-fire scenes of intense brutal violence. There hairdos were a bit much. There was no sword fight, but there was a great knife fight that was totally satisfying. Their was almost a Bollywood dance number as the hero and villain squared off in a crowded disco rave.

I enjoyed it. I will miss netflix.
