Wait...I hated Pern. I read it as a youth because it had dragons in it, but I totally gave up on the series because there weren't enough swordfights. Never mind.

 The Pern books would never had sold as well as they did if it weren't for Michael Whelan.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
