Hugh Cornwell @ 03/05/11 Red Devil Lounge,SF

So this review is late. Sue me.

I'm recovering from a week long flu/ear infection and can finally reflect on the crazy month of March.

Hugh Cornwell was the singer for The Stranglers. The Stranglers were this crazy mish-mash of psychedelic + blues + experimental music that evolved from punk to pop without any notice from America. I first heard them on 'Peaches', a semi-spoken word piece about an ill-fated beach trip. What grabbed me was the heavy reliance on keyboards. Every song relied on deep keyboard riffs and solos. 'No More Heroes'. 'Get a Grip on Yourself'' and ''Hanging Around' swirled on the carnival organ hooks of keyboardist Dave Greenfield.

No keyboards were present here. Just long guitar rhythm sections where keyboards would be. Very weird.

The Red Devil Lounge was a top-notch venue though. I ordered a Daywalker. The bartender filled a pint glass with ice, filled the glass almost to the top with whiskey and topped it off with ginger beer.

The show was great, just a little karaoke-ish with the keyboards missing.
