The Mermen @ Moe's Alley 8/14/2010

The Mermen played two sets. The first was with Jennifer Burnes on bass. She was their bass player from 2000-2006. She was amazing. She plays a bass with a whammy bar! As a three piece band, she fills the rhythm guitar roll as well as bass. She's really amazing. If you get a chance to catch her with The Mermen, or The Shitones, check her out:

They took a short break after about an hour, then came back with a different bass player. Then they played without stopping until 1am, about 3 hours total...They had someone doing video during the show - digital video projection. Some of it was kitschy 60's music clips, including several music segments from Lancelot Link...

All, in all, a fun show, but I got kinda board with the second set which was more of a surf-influenced jam session.

Forgot to mention...they had a support crew: someone selling merchandise, and someone running the photobooth out back. They had set up a backdrop and props and were taking shots of any fans that wanted to participate. The gal who was doing the photography was manning the hula hoop between shots. During one of the songs in the second set, the video switched to a shot of a griddle and lots of bacon frying. Photo girl went through the audience distributing bacon from a paper bag. Bacon makes everything better!

coincidentally, my kid is at girl scouts camp now doing a week at 'gilligan's island' which is sort of a survival camp where they have to make shelters, gather food, etc. t has gilligan's island season 1 & 2 on DVD, but none of her fellow scouts really know what it is.
