Echo and the Bunnymen @ The Fox Theater, Oakland 10/22/09
#1
I'm liking this trend of bands performing a classic album from start to finish. Tonight it was Echo and the Bunnymen performing 'Ocean Rain' in its entirety accompanied by and orchestra.

It was my first show at the newly renovated Fox Theater in Oakland and I was duly impressed. Enormous carvings of Arabian sultans flank the stage, gazing with glowing eyes at the hipster crowd. The walls were ornately decorated with intricate reliefs. The owners spared no expense in making the venue look like a 1940's opera house. Very classy.

The opening band was 'She Wants Revenge'. They had the Interpol/Editors sound but very little stage presence. I kept myself occupied with a game on my ITouch.

Echo's set was note-for-note perfect. Ian McCulloch did his best Jim Morrison (sans trouser-dropping) and the music rolled out like honey. The small orchestra was not mixed well and was difficult to hear.

It was a nice night out and good to see downtown Oakland starting to get a nightlife scene.
