Ninja Academy @ Caffe Pergolesi, Santa Cruz
#1
"The Perg" is still the same: a big victorian house. The bands set up in one of the front rooms. The first band played 2 (or maybe 3) loooonng songs. Almost everyone watching was their entourage. When they finished, they took a while to pack up. As Ninja Academy set up the place cleared out. I think there was about 10 people there. After they started playing the first band came back in after loading up their equipment and little by little the crowd grew.

The bass player is amazing. The drummer is fun. Great show. Part way through two guys showed up, probably college students. One was dressed in a suit that seemed more like a costume. It became evident pretty quick that they were on another plane. The Perg doesn't have a cover charge, so to stumble into a free, awesome concert - you could to worse...They were fun to watch. They guy in the suit took off his shoes, then took off one sock, then balled it up and stuck it in the shoe, then tried to put the shoe back on. He spent most of the time dancing on the weekly newspapers he'd strewn on the floor.

I don't think NA knew what they were getting into playing there. It was the first gig on their nation-wide tour, and the only money they made was off T-Shirt and CD sales. Poor guys. I have all their CDs and thanks to the Yeti, I now have a T-shirt too. So I gave them a $5 tip.

They are playing Gilman Street tomorrow and at the Alano up in the city on Sat. If you're not doing anything, check 'em out. They need the gas money...
