Santa Cruz locals might recognize Nina Paley as one of the Good Times weekly paper cartoonist alumni. Here's a sample (I never really enjoyed her strip):

She's gotten a lot of press recently for a full length animated project called "Sita Sings the Blues" which sets the classic Hindu myth Ramayana to 20's jazz music. I've seen 4-5 clips over the past few years and they're pretty neat. Apparently, even though the recordings that the animation is set to are out of copyright, the compositions themselves are not:

...which meant that unless she could pay the exorbitant license fees, she couldn't distribute the film. Well, now the film will air on PBS in New York on March 7th, but can be seen in its entirety online here:
