I guess they didn't get the memo about the television series being a parody with a dose of satire. Instead they made an action comedy with a kind of naive secret agent who only needs to learn the ropes to get better. And from the direction the movie takes, he will eventually overcome those flaws.
If you had never seen and enjoyed the original, this film was alright. There was some funny interaction at Control. They had some good cameos. There was some good toss backs to the original series. Why they couldn't use real doors into control headquarters and had to use CGI ones, I don't know.
And I have a Tenuous tie in to this movie. Peter Segal, the Get Smart director, directed The Longest Yard. So, he has a track record of screwing up remakes.
Terrance Stamp was lost. Anne Hathaway looked good. Duane Johnson still struggles to be an actor. And if only Steve Carrell could do dry humour, this film would have been monster.
