A martial arts prodigy uses his kung fu to excel in basketball. This is exactly what it sounds like, a rip-off of
Shaolin Soccer. Jay Chou is the lead but fails to live up to the promise he showed in
Curse of the Golden Flower. He wanders through the film's CGI wire fu, attempted a dull Bruce Lee impersonation. There's some great actors in supporting roles around him like Eric Tsang (
Infernal Affairs,
Hitman), and Man Tat Ng (the coach from
Shaolin Soccer
hock: ). There's some excellent CGI fu. There's also some funny/unique scenes and some interesting cinematography. There's even a few characters that remind me of people I know or knew - that's a little disturbing, truth be told. However the idea is so derivative and never gets past that. The ending is very
Prisoner of Azkaban.
I watched a version that had no sound of subtitles, but it didn't matter much.

Time to see a real martial arts flick. When are you going to review David Mamet's foray into martial pictures, "Redbelt". Just checking.

If Tim gets choked out with a guillotine, I'm so there.

Pass. With or without the Guillotine. Tim is a deal breaker these days. Although he was very good in GalaxyQuest, there is too much dreck on the other side of the scales.

I'm in. Tim Allen plays an overweight hollywood player. He looked terrible, so I'm going! But it stars Chiwelti Okeafor and I like him. He played the bad guy in Serenity and the cross dresser in Kinky Boots. If they could have gotten Terrence Howard in there as well, ooh baby. But it has the usual suspects from Mamet films, including the wonderful Ricky Jay We had a card throwing contest in his honor at Monte Vista. Get me to the screening, KFM, and I'll write the review. Unless Dr Reid is already penciled in.

And here we are. I stumbled across Redbelt on one of the pay cable channels last night. I saw the last ten minutes. I might have to see the rest now to see how they got to this ending. In the scenes, I saw Okeafor learns the matches in the MMA world are rigged and he has to take a dive. He doesn't like that and wants to tell everyone after backing out of his fight. As he goes to tell one of the announcers about the fight being rigged, he gets into a brawl with security guards. He also ends up fighting the guy he was supposed to lose to I think. This fight takes place in the on ramp to the stage. I saw one quick shot of Tim Allen. I did see a bit with Ricky Jay playing Ricky Jay.
I'm ready to see the rest of this.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
