The launch of the franchise which I have not revisited since it came out. It’s still fun. Young Statham & Shu Qi, under the direction of Besson, with a script by Kamen (The Karate Kid), and fight choreo by Corey Yuen - nuf said, right? Well no - each have had plenty of flops on their own but this film showcases the best of them in a super campy precursor of the Fast & Furious franchise. It’s entertaining as long as you don’t spend any brain cells thinking about it. It’s just absurd action, no pretenses here. There’s a lot of dumb but who cares? Nowhere did it promote itself as intelligent or thoughtful.
What stood out the most for me here was the explosions and car chases, which were all real. I think I grew jaded about car chases back in the day but all the cgi ones now gave me such great respect for the old real stuff. Same goes for explosions. It takes a moment to sink in - that stunt is 100% real. Luv that.
Statham was far less annoying when he was younger and he manages some fine choreo under Corey. He was quite the kicker in his day. And Shu Qi is staggeringly gorgeous. Her broken English word is for her character.
Recommended for D00Mers who’ve never seen this, or like me, can’t quite remember it that well.
