A K-mash up of John Wick and Saving Face. A bit longer than it needs to be, but the action is good, juxtaposed with some moving mother/daughter drama.
Gil Boksoon is a middle aged single mom of a teen A grade assassin. She juggles her secret identity with her rebellious teen daughter who knows nothing of her mom’s career and amazingly is never used as a hostage.
This opens with a yakuza hit on a bridge contruction site that’s wakazashi v hatchet. The fights are few and far in between but when they go down, they are well worth the wait. Clever, complex, whirling cinematography, digi-blood - got a genuine chuckle at a knife throwing scene that had just a bit of Kung Fu Hustle knife throwing vibe (an homage almost). The assassins at the bar is great and even drew a solid chuckle.
D00M recommended especially if you like K-films.

Was? You should keep it there. I’d be interested in your thoughts on it.
It had one device that I’ve seen before and am on the fence about. Kill (or Gil) visualizes outcomes of fights before they happen. So some fights start and end with her dying, and then there’s a rewind to the beginning of the fight where she chooses a different path to avoid said outcome. It does provide extra to the fights, but it’s like the dream sequence that just kinda wastes time too, or the awkward deus ex machina that resolves something after the writers paint themselves into a corner. However, this film takes this concept to an extreme which I appreciated.

That was a good movie. Well-acted, great-looking movie. Even the daughter did not cross the “too damn annoying” line (though she did cozy right up to it a few times). The violence was high-quality, along with everything else. Nice to see really solid acting and writing in an action movie.
The scene early in the movie when the moms are having lunch — that gave me flashbacks to my every day. Those are fencing parents.
Kudos for the obvious tendon-slicing and femoral artery cutting, too.

I was supposed to see this and now I have. It's a big old melodrama seasoned with an assassin's story. It was kind of okay. The movie really didn't get hopping until about ninety minutes in with the fight in the assassins restaurant but the story kind of kept me interested. I did feel that our lead didn't have the muscle mass to be that good of a fighter but I went with.
The fight sequences where they showed possible outcomes of the fight was a bit of an emotional cheat, manipulated by the filmmakers to feel bad our lead was dead only to find out we'd been tricked. I didn't much care for it but it did pay off nicely in the final big fight in the big boss's office when you had dozens of scenarios happening all at once.
The only missed opportunity I thought was they never went into the parentage of Kill's daughter. I thought for sure it was going to be the Big Boss's child but they never explained it. And how did Kill take time out to have a baby?
The bar fight in Vladivostok was really good, too.

I was afraid that your fear of the fate of Boksun’s 49ers jacket would ruin the experience for you.
