My Family
Over the weekend, my mother decided to get Pneumonia. They sent her back to Kaiser from the Rehab Center. She'll be at Kaiser for a few days before she probably goes back to Rehab. The elder sister wants her to go to a different Rehab place. My mother was starting to hate the former/neighbor roommate. Everyone in the facility has a TV. And they are on all the time. The roommate is a touch deaf so her TV is very loud. I don't know why they don't have headphones.

They don't do much with her there at the Rehab center. She gets about an hour of PT and then 23 hours of waiting in bed. Lying in bed prone is a great way to get pneumonia.

Oh no. Which rehab center?

I'm not sure. But it's near Payne off San Thomas.

San Thomas Convalescent Hospital is where my mother was between Kaiser visits. Big Kaiser, of course.

You could be in for a long ride with this. My mom got pneumonia 3 times in four months. That was the beginning of her last decline.

The worst thing you can do for pneumonia is to lie prone all day and that's what they have her doing in the rehab center.

Rehab facilities suck as far as I can tell. Similarly my mom also didn't move much when she got on the pneumonia train.

Finally, the full on freak out. It had to happen because it always does happen.

Today, my mother decided my eldest sister, with the aid of my mother's caregiver, is trying to kill her by playing around with her medications.

Paranoia is a dementia red-flag.

My mom is paranoid that she will run out of money and every time we meet, that takes up some of our conversation (she's got her IRA, which I will start tapping in 2023, and that'll hold her for several years). My mom also had a dementia exam from her doctor and passed with flying colors. No sign of dementia.

Paranoia is nothing for my mother. She cycles in and out of it all the time. The family has felt for years she has an undiagnosed mental problem.

Yes, you've mentioned that. And we wonder if it's you that is the paranoid one.

Just kidding. We know. We remember the great book tape scandal of D00M's youth.

Paranoia is also a precursor to schizophrenia, and if your mom is borderline, that tracks. However, as she ages, dementia onset might exacerbate this.

Aren't you glad we have a psych student here in D00M?

Srsly tho, I hope things settle down for you and her. Pneumonia is a tough one. Been there, done that. No fun.

Hey! It's not paranoia if people are out to get me.

I'm good. The sisters are the ones taking the brunt. I looked on a map and the rehab facility was across the parking lot from sister's condo. Yikes. Elder sister calls my mother every day and also checks in with nursing staff every day to see how they are treating my mother.

must be nice to have sibs...

Honestly, I would've lost it with dealing with my parents if not for Stacy. She helps so much.

My mom went through a paranoid phase when she started to have her mental decline. (They avoid saying dementia, so they say "cognitive impairment.") That was just before she needed in home handlers.

I remember that I tried to tell her that she was having memory issues, and she replied that I thought she had Alzheimer's and she never wanted to see me again. For a while I was relieved; I thought I could relax. But then she called me about 20 times in one day to apologize, so I was back on the job.

Woohoo. My mother just went back to the ER. Once again her warfarin is out of whack. How can they tell? Rectal bleeding. (I feel you wince) The diverticulitis and the diarrhea aren't helping matters. They gave her Vitamin K and a blood transfusion. Originally, she did not want to go. She said she wanted to die at home. My sisters convinced her otherwise. The neighbors must be thrilled for all these ambulance transports.
