Bummer. Hope Mauve isn’t suffering too much.

Mauve is how Sandy Chen pronounces Maeve.
Pupdate: We have visited the vet. We have been given drugs. Well Maeve has been given antiinflamatories and pain medication. Oddly, it's the same pain medication my father took. He had bottles of the stuff when he passed. I guess I should have kept some. Dr. Lazercheff (probably best doctor name ever) said it was pretty pointless to take x-rays because he knew what he would find: arthritis, bone loss and bulging discs. She has lost a lot of her muscle mass in her rear legs. Basically, there is no treatment that will bring her back to full health. Maeve is in her end game and the best we can do is make her comfortable. Her time is measured in months. That being said, she had a great time sniffing around outside the vets office. We also did a short walk up the street today. Yes, she walks like a drunken sailor ready to fall, but she still wants to walk. Onward. I feel less miserable today.

Pupdate.
Maeve has given a hearty FU to the thoughts of her imminent demise. It's probably the pain pills she is on. But she is back going for walks and waking us up in the middle of the night to tell us about coyote intruders. That being said, she has declined. We've put up matts on all the tile floors because she is afraid of slipping on them. She is having difficulty navigating the doggy doors so tQ and I are on constant door opening duty. That being said, if she wants to badly enough she can get through them. She still has some issues with balances but nowhere near as bad as it was ten days ago. Again, drugs. But I did check on Doggy google about her symptoms particularly her head cock to the left (If you see the FB pic today, you can see it). Initially, we thought she had something in her ear. A quick check with the flashlight revealed nothing. But a check online came up with something called Vestibular disease. Also known by Old Dog Vestibular disease. The onset is sudden. It involves the head cock and the loss of balance. There is no treatment but it clears up by itself. Maeve acts like she has something lodged in her ear and wants to shake her head to dislodge it. The first couple of days when she would shake her head, she would start to fall and have to stop. Now, she can shake her head. Her head is still cocked. One of the tricks at the moment is she is hungry all the time. She has also decided she no longer likes her kibble. That's a problem. So, Maeve is towards the end of her story. But I don't think she is quite on her last page.

Well, for now the good/bad balance has tipped toward good. (ish?) So that's something. Good luck.

There’s some hope. I wonder if that’s what’s afflicting my neighbor’s dog Joey.
One of our dog park friends had a vestibular issue that she attributed to her 2nd booster. She had to use a walker for a while but is better now although she carries a cane.

Now I've heard of it 3x in a month.

Quick question about Maeve - did she get any vaccination shots in the last two months? I was sharing the stories of Maeve and Joey, and some of our dog park friends said that Old Dog Vestibular Disease can be a reaction to vaxxes. It's the same thing that happened to a fellow dog parker after she got her second covid booster.

Although it isn't impossible, the odds of that being the cause of her problem are extremely low. I'm skeptical.

If you search online, you’ll find articles that deny the connection of odvd and vaxxes, as well as vestibular neuritis and the Covid vax, which begs the question, why deny what doesn’t exist? It opens that deep dark conspiracy theory rabbit hole, which is particularly suspicious when it comes to drug companies…

Sigh. No vaccinations here. And like I said, there was the woman at the Vet who mentioned to her partner that vaccinations was a plan by the government to kill us.....

Fact-checkers frequently deny that which does not exist.

Right. Who knows what is what anymore?
The thing that tripped me out was that when my friend got vestibular neuritis immediately after her 2nd booster, she attributed it to the shot. I didn't really think much about that but she's pro-vax since she got her 2nd booster 2 months ago (we still haven't gone there because the research seems to say that it doesn't last very long so we're thinking of saving it until the anticipated fall surge). She's still experiencing vertigo. Then after this thread, I did a web search and several articles came up about the connection between VN and covid vax came up, which made me wonder why... As for older dogs and vaxxes, several of my dog park friends have experienced side effects when vaccinating their previous older dogs. One even got a exemption from rabies because it messed with her dog so bad. I haven't seen Joey's owner today but I'll ask. I'm just curious now.

Maeve just finished her second long walk of the day which included a trip up the north, something she typically eschews. When we get to the turn for that trail she usually continues on down the trail and we catch up with her later, waiting for us. But not today. She will now sleep for the rest of the day.
