The Olympics
#61
I also watched some indoor cyling event that was insane. It was a team event. There seemed like a hundred guys on the track which was 90 guys too many. At any point some were racing and others were just cruising around waiting for there turn to race. There were sprint challenges. I think it was 100 laps. But insane.

I’ve fallen way behind in my viewing. I’ve enjoyed its strangeness because it’s a snapshot of now. It’s occupied my Instagram the most because I followed it there along with a lot of the athletes. I’ll be glad when that subsides.

Not until this year's belated Olympics did I realize just how jampacked with track and field enthusiasts DOOM is.  I'm sure all of you watched the women's 100 meter dash, as well as that epic men's 1500 meter race where Ingebrigtsen of Norwegia shattered the Olympic record, and in fact even Hocker -- the last American hope -- broke the old Olympic record with a sixth place finish.

Well, get ready for a follow-up to both at the Prefontaine Classic being held in Eugene this coming weekend.  First off, the bronze, silver and gold medalists will all be competing once more in the 100 meter dash -- alongside ill-fated Sha'Carri Richardson who was kicked off our Olympic team for smoking a joint.  A great opportunity for her to redeem herself.

Ingebrigtsen of Norwegia will be there too, not running the 1500 meter race but the mile, because this America, where archaic weights and measures matter.  He'll be trying to break the mile world record of 3:43.13, set by El Guerrouj of Morocco 22 years ago in 1999).  In fact, no one has come within 3 seconds of that time in recent history, making one wonder about the thoroughness of drug-testing in that era.  But if anyone can challenge it these days, it's Ingebrigtsen of Norwegia.  He'll be competing against many of his Olympic rivals from the 1500 meter race.  Hocker does not seem to be present.  Anyway, it looks like a quality field sure to push the pace.

I heard about the Sha'Carri race. I hope she shows what she can do.

I liked that our female marathoner took bronze in only her third marathon ever. I also like the Polish women in Javelin who auctioned off her silver medal to raise money to pay for the surgery of an infant. She raised $125K from a Polish supermarket chain. The supermarket chain gave her the money and told her to keep her medal.

I hadn't heard that Polish javelin story.  Very touching.

BTW, I shouldn't have suggested that the Moroccan El Guerrouj of old used anything but his talent in setting the mile record.  He was an incredible runner back then, and had some high-caliber competitors to push him.

A couple of friends, Carol and Bob, were in Eugene recently.  They asked us what there was to see there.  Even though we both had lived there, and it's where we met, we couldn't come up with anything.  They still managed to see some interesting stuff we'd never known about (such as the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History).

Then they traveled onward, to elsewhere.

Yesterday I texted them, letting them know about the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene this weekend, and that if they were at all into track and field, that would have been something to see.  There was a long pause.  Then Carol texted me back: "That explains the $350 a night hotel rooms."  That's what ultimately drove them out and onward.

Alas, such timing.

I caught the hour and a half coverage of the Prefontaine Classic on NBC.

Sha'Carri had her showdown with all the 100 meter Olympic medalists.  She lost by 10 fingernails and two eyelashes.  That might sound close, but it was more like 10 yards (apologies for mixing measuring systems) and she finished last in a field of nine.  I'm thinking she should forgo doing any more commercials for NIKE, because if there's anyone NIKE cares more about, it's NIKE.

I see a whole lot of room for maturity going forward for Sha'Carri.  Wishing her the best.

Meanwhile, Ingebrigtsen of Norwegia fared better in the mile run.  He didn't break the world record, but broke the meet record.  It's such a joy to see him finally coming into his own, especially after being overshadowed time and again by the Kenyans.  I've been following him for several years, clear back to when he was an alternate for Santa's team of reindeer.  He was supposed to take over for Blitzen when he retired, but Blitzen kept changing his mind and saying, "Oh, maybe I'll give it another year."  Until Ingebrigtsen finally lost patience, cut off his antlers, learned to run on two feet, and the rest is history.

Screw skateboarding. The next new olympic event should be haka.

We need a DOOM haka.

Wouldn't we need a sense rhythm for that?

Ya know, two DOOM brothers are musicians. And KB's police stare could totally work as that psycho haka gaze.

Tara is working a part time job at Urban Outfitters downtown.

She just ran into Simone Biles there. There’s a gymno show at Chase tomorrow.

McKayla & Grace were there too
