It was a family event, which is very rare in my life because everyone is so busy. My mom, who had never seen any Shrek film before, laughed a lot. My wife enjoyed seeing a movie on the big screen with our kid. My dad kept his eyes on the popcorn. My kid loved it. I enjoyed it although it would have been a little better had I not read so many spoilers in the reviews. It could have used a little less Timberlake and a little more princesses. I have new respect for Snow White. The puss and donkey thing gave me a chuckle or two. Nice to hear two of the pythons reunite, even if Cleese phoned that one in and Idle overdid it like usual and they were no where near each other in any of the scenes. I missed Waits as Hook. The new Hook wasn't nearly as effective (and I think that was the only notable voice actor change).
It's a lot like 2 - a true sequel - plenty of references to the previous films and that same quick witty humor. Puss still kills me. If you liked 2 (tQ), you'll probably like this. If you didn't like 2 (HK, our resident cartoon snob), you'll hate this one too. There are plenty of loose ends (still not sure what happened to the boat captain) and another sequel could be made.

Or revisionist? I dunno.
On a suggestion, we watched Shrek 2 on Saturday before seeing the Third on Sunday. I laughed a fair bit at 2 and enjoyed the Third. I do wish they hadn't had the Snow White moment in the trailer. I thought Third was a bit uneven, for all there are some good laughs in it. Shrek wasn't terribly believable either as mean nasty ogre or kinder gentler 'let's get this kid on our side' mush ball. The parts were greater than the whole for me.
But I did find a fair bit funny. Loved the babies dream/nightmare sequence.
However, I have NO idea what they'll do with 4 and 5, both of which Dreamworks has directors assigned to.

Yeah, I thought your earlier drubbing of 2 was too much. Good to hear that you've come around on this. Donkey's part in the baby dream was downright creepy in an almost Terry Gilliam sort of way. Also liked Gingy's life-flashing-before-eyes bit, even though it was so tangential. I'm still chuckling over seeing Snow's tat.
So 4 and 5 are on? Who's directing? As for plot, obviously the spawn of Dragon and Donkey will mate with the Ogre brood to form the cutest, hideous mutants ever. Puss has a history that needs to be developed. Mrs. DM theorizes that Artie is the son of Charming, based mostly on physical resemblance. I'm thinking Chow Yun Fat can come in as Shan Yu, who's still mad at Donkey for causing that avalanche as Mushu, and then maybe Jackie Chan can team with Donkey for Rush 48 Hours.

We needed more Puss in Boots is what I say.
Wouldn't it have been nice if Shrek were actually the hero of this movie, rather than just King Arthur's chauffeur? How did they get the rights for a Led Zeppelin song. That is supposed to be next to impossible. Who knew Larry King was the ugly stepsister? Or was I the only one.
We sat through the three hours of credits for the super surprise ending. Turns out that is at the end of the Pirates credits.
Lots of funny. Lots of who cares.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
